COPULAS FOR HYDROLOGY
AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
Nanjing, China, August 13-19, 2017
The statistical modeling of natural events frequently involves the modeling of the joint distribution of several random phenomena. Copulas are mathematical objects that are particularly suitable for modeling the multivariate dependence between several continuous random variables, independently of their marginal distributions. This explains why they are more and more often used in hydrology and environmental sciences. With the development of powerful statistical software (such as the R statistical system), a multivariate analysis based on copulas appears increasingly feasible. This one-week short course will focus on the theory and statistical practice of copulas with applications to hydrological problems and related environmental issues. It will also contain an introduction to multivariate extreme-value theory from a copula perspective. Theoretical concepts will be illustrated through the analysis of real-world datasets using the R statistical system.
The event is organized by the International Commission on Statistical Hydrology. It is hosted by College of Hydrology and Water Resources & State Key Laboratory of Hydrology-Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering, Hohai University, China.

Introduction to the theory of copulas [definition, properties, measures of association, conditioning, construction of copulas].
Estimation of copulas from data [method of moments, maximum pseudo-likelihood, R examples].
Projects - Data presentations, target of the projects.
Wednesday, August 16
Goodness-of-fit and related tests for copulas [with R examples].
Projects - presentation of data provided by students - discussion of specific and common problems.
Thursday, August 17
Applications of copulas in environmental sciences [multivariate Return Periods, multivariate Hazard Scenarios, multivariate Failure Probabilities, multivariate Structural risk assessment, problems of Ties, Basin similarity].

The participants, who will take intermediate registration A or B, should look for their roommates by themselves, and should inform the organizing committee that who will share the room when making registration.
Once your application is approved, you will be sent an email explaining how to register and make the payment.
The summer school will take place in the lovely historical town of Nanjing, East China (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanjing) and it is hosted by College of Hydrology and Water Resources of Hohai Univeristy (http://en.hhu.edu.cn).
The lectures will take place in the building of Graduate School of Hohai University (Wentian Building). Accommodation will be arranged in Jindun Hotel (3-star) and Hohai University International Conference Center & Hotel (4-star) which are close to the main gate of Hohai University and 500 m far from the lecture place (10 min by foot).
How to come to the venue place?
We will provide to participants the transfer by shuttle bus from Nanjing Lukou International Airport, Nanjing South Railway Station and Nanjing Railway Station to Hohai University (Jindun Hotel and Hohai University International Conference Center & Hotel) on August 13 and vice-versa on August 19.
The nearest airports are Nanjing Lukou International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. Nanjing Lukou International Airport has direct international flights from a few flight hubs such as Frankfurt, Sydney, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, and Bangkok, and has many flights from Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. It is strongly suggested that international participants use these flight connections to reach Nanjing. Participants arriving at Shanghai Pudong International Airport should take the airport shuttle or taxi to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and then take the high-speed train to Nanjing Railway Station or Nanjing South Railway Station (1 hour 7 mins to 2 hours). Participants arriving at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport can directly walk to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Stations (5 mins) and then take the high-speed train to Nanjing Railway Station or Nanjing South Railway Station.
